Pysanky
Pysanky
Pysanky is an ancient art form that can be traced back over millennia and is connected to both the cyclical rejuvenation of nature and Christian tradition. Following the arrival of Christianity, Psyanky came to represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pysanky requires long hours of preparation for the traditional church blessing the day before Easter.
This creation process entails a meticulous dyeing procedure that involves carefully liquefying beeswax, which is applied onto the surface of an uncooked egg using a tool known as a kistka, or stylus. Once the dyeing process is finished, the remaining wax is removed, and a glaze is applied.
Notably, the art of Psanky showcases subtle regional variations within Ukraine, with each variation featuring a distinct array of designs and symbols that carry unique meanings across Ukraine’s different regions. Brantford’s Ukrainian community brought this tradition with them continues to practice it to this day.
