Learn about the immigration of Brantford’s Ukrainian community following World War II.

Post-World War II Immigration

After WWII, the Ukrainian community saw a third wave of immigration that came to Brantford. This wave included many of the Ukrainian immigrants escaping from the Soviet Union. Many people in this wave of immigrants were in professional fields of work, holding careers as doctors, scientists, engineers, and pharmacists. This wave also brought to Brantford other persecuted people that were deemed suspicious by the Soviet Union. These professional workers came to Canada, in part due to the Soviet Union’s government labeling of these types of occupations as suspicious in nature.

Through the years leading up to the present day, Ukrainian immigration can still be seen in Brantford. While there might not be precise estimates of the numbers for this fourth wave of Ukrainians currently, the ongoing wave predominantly comprises individuals seeking refuge from the Russo-Ukrainian war. This new wave of immigration encompasses people from all walks of life and will provide the City of Brantford a new revitalization of the Ukrainian community through their sharing of heritage and culture.
