Learn about the history of Village Ukraina’s participation in the Villages program.

Village Ukraina

The Villages program was initiated in the early to mid-1970s as an effort by Brantford community members to showcase the history, cultural traditions, cultural displays, and regalia of a chosen heritage. Village Ukraina embraced this concept of heritage display and enthusiastically participated in the Village events held during the summer. The Ukrainian community, along with participants from the wider Brantford community, delved into Ukrainian culture through captivating performances, preparation and sharing of traditional meals, and engagement with customs such as pysanky and embroidery.

As Village Ukraina grew in popularity, it gained recognition through awards granted by the Central Committee. The Ukrainian community secured accolades including best village, best entertainment, and best cultural display. Village Ukraina has become a longstanding tradition within the community, still actively taking place in the Brantford International Villages Cultural Festival today.
