Brantford’s First Ukrainian Choir
Brantford’s First Ukrainian Choir
On November 7, 1937, Brantford’s first Ukrainian choir performed at the Ukrainian People’s Home on Dunstan street. J. L. Kassyan of Toronto led and directed the choir through their six songs, all performed in Ukrainian.
At this event, there were also individual performances, including a violin selection by Mr. Kassyan, a vocal number by Miss Sophia Winkobroda, and a vocal solo by Mr. Sweder. There was also an address given by J. Kowtaluka, a well-known speaker, who discussed the event's goals and the ideals of the association to which the Brantford Ukrainian community was affiliated. His speech, along with all the performances, were well received, and the event was deemed a resounding success by the newspaper and by those in attendance.
This inaugural event demonstrated Brantford's Ukrainian community coming together to celebrate and showcase their culture to the broader community.
