The West Indian & Caribbean Village

First introduced at Brantford’s International Villages Festival in 1990, the West Indian Village brought the rhythm and flavour of the islands to St. Basil’s Hall. Organized by the Brantford West Indian Cultural Organization, it quickly became a highlight of the festival, with calypso, reggae, steel drums, and dancing in the aisles.

Visitors sampled jerk chicken, curried goat, roti, and coconut cake, while exhibits of tropical fruits, spices, crafts, and wooden carvings showcased island culture. Local children’s dance groups and guest performers from Toronto and Ottawa added to the lively atmosphere.

The West Indian Village was more than spectacle—it was celebration, pride, and belonging. What once seemed foreign became part of Brantford’s shared rhythm: the music, the food, and the joy of the islands now woven into the city’s cultural soul.

The tradition lived on: the Caribbean Village returned in 2016 and 2020, once again filling Brantford with the sounds, tastes, and joy of the islands—a lasting celebration of heritage, pride, and community.
