Genocide and Escape to Brantford
Genocide and Escape to Brantford
In the 1890s, letters from Mrs. McCallum to Mrs. Dr. Lowrey were published in the Brantford Expositor. At this time, Mrs. McCallum and her husband, Mr. McCallum, a missionary, were in Marash, Armenia. The letters detail the suffering of the citizens they had encountered, describe the attacks they witnessed, and request money to aid the people in Marash. A later article in the Brantford Expositor mentions Mr. McCallum getting arrested for distributing aid.
In Brantfod churches, addresses were made about the suffering in Armenia. Rev. George H. Fillian, an Armenian refugee, also held a lecture in Armenian about his experiences and his views. Sometime during the 1880s to 1890s Colonel Harry Cockshutt recruited ten Keghi people from Constantinople for the Cockshutt Plow Works in Brantford.
